Reflection

Since I am such a cave man I really struggled with with the blog. It took me so long just to make a blog post and have it come out the way i wanted. On the other hand for people who are tech-savy enough I do believe that it is a good idea because it was a good way for the class to get to know a little bit about each other but for me I can say i tried something new but this is simply not for me.
Media In My Life

Television: I had never really thought about the role that my television played in my life until we started discussing media in class. In my household we have a television in every room of our house. I personally watch about two hours of TV a day except on Sundays during football season, where I can literally spend all day watching football. And In my house it bring my family together in the evenings when the women in my house watch their novellas.

Laptop: My laptop is about five years old and I share it with both of my sisters. As of two days ago my laptop broke and that is unfortunate because that is what I used to view my e-mails and do homework. No Facebook.

X-Box: This is my half broken game console that I use almost every day. Though I use it every day I never use it to play video games, I use this as my DVD player since I do not have one. I watch a movie almost every day so this is something of importance to me.

Nintendo 64: This is my game console that I do use to play video games. I like to go old school when it comes to video games. I can spend sometimes hours glued to the screen playing Super Mario games with my fiends. This game console means a lot to me because it was the first game system I ever got one Christmas year when I was little.

I-pod: Out of all these media belonging that I have in my life this is the most important to me. Even though the screen is cracked it still functions perfectly fine. My music is really important to me, I guess I can say that it really calms me when I listen to it that is why I try to have my headphones on at all times. I feel naked when I do not have my I-pod in my pocket next to my car keys.
 Into The Wild. Selfishness?

Yeah I said it selfish. At first when I started reading the book Into The Wild I said to myself "Damn this guys Chris is pretty cool for not agreeing with society and just leaving" but as I kept reading I started to dislike this guy very much. In my eyes he was just a arrogant and selfish kid because of the way that he did things. In my opinion if he was truly unhappy with society he shouldn't have just abandoned it, if he really cared about society he would have stayed in it and done his part to make any little contribution to make it better. He also abandoned his family, leaving them worried because they did not know of his whereabouts and that is probably one of the worst thing that a parent could go threw not knowing if their child is alive and well. And arrogant, he thought he could survive the Alaskan frontier with not enough food, and not proper equipment like a map disregarding the warnings of people he met along the way who told him that he needed more food and at least a compass and map, damn what a bozo. It was just a matter of time before it all caught up to him when he ran out of food and starved to death.

What Is Success? Here's a Better Definition

On Monday we read a article by Geoffrey James where he clearly lets us know that he truly believes that to be successful doesn't mean having a lot of money. He uses himself as an example by telling us about how he used to get paid a lot working as marketing executive but still he did not feel complete because his true passion was writing. He then took the leap to do what he loved by becoming a full time writer even though he got paid less. His point was that to pursue a career that you really do like and will feel like good about doing it everyday not a career that catches your attention just because it pays a lot because with money you can buy nice things but not happiness.
Into The Wild. You Don't Need Money .

You would think that being wealthy, having a college education and bright future ahead of you  would make everyone happy well apparently some people would rather have no money and hitchhike across the country to the middle of nowhere and to them that is happiness. In Into The Wild by Jon Krakaruer the main character Chris does just that he abandons his seemingly perfect life to pursue what will truly make him happy. The message that he is sending is a important one he is saying that just because you have money does not mean that you are happy and  that if you do not have money that you can still be happy and not miserable.  He is searching for something more he is searching for his freedom and independence, he also doesn't agree with how society functions and no longer wants to be apart of it. He is searching for what will make him happy and to him it is not materialistic, he doesn't believe that having a bunch of stuff is what people should aspire for, because at the end of the day it is just stuff.

Turn Off the TV before It Ruins Us

For class I read an article written by David Nyhan where he tries to persuade his readers that television is bad for kids. He uses both statistics and personal opinions to prove his point. I have to say that I have to agree with David when he says that too much television is bad for kids because he uses some really good statistics like for example he points out that every kid in America witnesses on average sixteen thousand murders on TV before the ripe old age of eighteen and to me that is crazy because I believe that as kids to see so much violence from such a young age it sort of builds up kids to see acts of violence as something normal and not bad. Also on average kids watch four hours of TV a day and that is just way more than should be watched, instead those hours could be used to study and do homework. As previously stated I agree with David that television is bad for our youth but one thing that he said I had to completely throw out the window because he just sounded like a freaking idiot, he said that people  who are incarcerated are people who watched too much television when they were kids and that's just stupid because most of the people who are in jail are there for drug related charges or are career criminals not lazy people who sit on their buts all day eating hot pockets and watching CSI.

8 Mile

The Movie that I chose to watch and review is a movie that I have seen a bunch of times, so many times that I can't even begin to guess a number. I saw the movie 8 mile that stars the famous rapper Eminem. I picked this movie not only because it has one of my favorite rappers " and yes one of my favorite rappers is a white boy" but because it has a very important theme that we have been discussing throughout the whole semester, the theme of not giving up and learning from your mistakes. The main character Jimmy or " B-Rabbit" is faced with obstacles that seem insurmountable because he is a rapper with extreme talent but the problem is that not only is he from the ghetto side of town but he is white in the ghetto side of town trying to prove himself to African Americans who believe that "B-Rabbit" cant make it in the rap industry because he is white. I love this movie because Jimmy never gave up and faced all of the challenges that were in his way and succeeded proving all of his nay-Sayers wrong and that it doesn't matter what the color of your skin is but that if you love something and are good at it don't let the negativity of others stop you from pursuing your dreams. I would have to recommend this movie to anyone who is above the age of 17 or can sneak watching this movie without their parents noticing because it is rated R.
